That's what the OM calls for. Honda says they 1st service at 500 miles is $178 which I have to believe doesn't include that.

Thankfully the cams don't have to come out to make changes!

Seem to recall reading somewhere (here?) that the unusual early valve check was no longer specified?
Maybe dealer feedback showed no need.
    I didn't do mine

Yeah, I didn't do mine either. I have to verify with the dealer, but IIRC there was a service bulletin that specified new intervals (Or rather, said the first interval was unnecessary).

I read online that the service interval was extended to 16,000 miles from 8000 after a year of service. The owners manual of my 2014 calls for the 16k interval, but also for one at 500 miles. Just like an oil change.

My 2001 BMW F650 also dispensed with the early check according to the dealer. I did one anyway and found ZERO clearance on all four valves! I did the adjustments myself.

Hondas are WAY more better than BMWs quality wise so if the authorities call for no early check Im inclined to go with that.

But if Ive nothing better to do and its not too involved I may do it anyway.

They checked mine when it had it's first service at c.600 miles. £160+ later, all was fine...surprise, surprise. That was in early 2014 I think.

I too had mine done (at 800 miles) and no adjustment was needed but still paid the over $150 price tag for it. I only did mine because I didnt want to void the warranty. I figured if something went wrong and I hadnt done it, they would blame me not doing it. Right or wrong it was peace of mine for me.

My 2014 version service book calls for it at the first service of 600 miles, the 2015 manual doesn't, it shows 16,000 miles could even be a typo

See the post earlier about my first service, confirmed by Honda while at the dealer that it is not required at 600 miles and is first due at 16000 miles

I thought they did mine early, but it sounds like it apparently wasn't necessary.

Honda Germany just confirmed that the first check has to be done at 24,000 km (or 16,000 mls).
They do not ask for a valve clearance check at 1000 km any more.

Owners manual for 2018 CRF250L still has 600 mile inspection. Just did mine and found both exhausts need .05mm larger shims. Intakes were good.

Nope. I own a 2018 CRF250L and I went for the 600mls inspection. They changed the oil and that's it.
No valve inspection has been done in compliance with the maintenance chart included in the owners manual.
Honda stated that the valve clearance check at 600 mls was included by mistake and is not required, neither for the MD38 nor MD44.

First oil change @600 miles. Then every 8000 miles or yearly after that. That seems too long to me.
valves to be checked at 16kmiles.
This is per the 2018 manual.

    I do the 600mi check @ 500mi, then again @ 1000 @ 3000 @ 9000 @15000, etc.
