Rookie and championship leader Marc Marquez didn't run the consistently fastest pace at the first free practice at Italy's Misano circuit Friday but then he didn't have to. With a fast lap two-tenths of a second clear of his second-place teammate Dani Pedrosa, Marquez top spot wasn't seriously threatened all morning.

Yamaha teammates Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi, using Yamaha's new seamless gearbox, finished third and fourth respectively. Both riders noted that the new gearbox -- an effort to match technology with the Honda factory effort -- won't necessarily bring faster qualifying and practice times. But it will, they estimate, mean faster and more consistent laps and tire wear over race distance.

Alvaro Bautista finshed just behind Rossi (again) to round out the top five. Tech 3's Cal Crutchlow, typically near the top in practice and qualifying, struggled through the session finishing more than one second off the pace in 11th place.
