Winter riding means different things to different people, but we can all agree riding in the winter means chilly temperatures and a high possibility for rain. So, for this week’s winter buyer’s guide, we’re bringing you jackets and pants, all built to keep you dry and warm when the elements conspire against you. We’ve thrown in one-piece over-suits, too, for good measure.

For this guide, we stuck with gear that doesn’t require electricity to keep you warm and specifically sought out waterproof – not water repellent or resistant – items. Keeping to this criteria, we still found a staggering 246 items, for both men and women, ranging in price from a couple hundred bucks a piece to well over four digits. And odds are good we still missed a few as well. Instead of clogging the internet with everything we found, this guide will bring you 10 items (or combination of items) that span the collection.

Alpinestars Stella Bogota Drystar Jacket and Pants

    [IMG]Price: $349.95 (jacket), $269.95 (pants)

Size Range: S-2XL (jacket and pants)

    Colors: Black

Since this list will see plenty of items for men, we start off with the Alpinestars’ Stella Bogota Drystar jacket and Stella Bogota Drystar pant (not shown) combo, designed specifically for the female touring rider. It utilizes Alpinestars’ own Drystar waterproof membrane to keep the rider dry. Keeping the rider warm is a full-length thermal liner for both jacket and pants. Both can be removed easily via their zipper connection once the temps start rising, and strategically placed vents help promote airflow. CE-certified armor in the shoulders, elbows and knees provide impact protection, while standard padding in the chest and back can be replaced with hard armor.

Alpinestars carries a total of 18 garments (for both men and women) suitable for wet and cold/chilly rides, ranging in price from $229.95 – $899.95. See them all at www.alpinestars.com.

Dainese D. Explorer Gore-Tex Jacket and Pants

    [IMG]Price: $899.95 (jacket), $529.95 (pants)

Size Range (Euro): 44-60 (jacket and pants)

Colors: Dark Gull Gray, Simple Taupe (jacket and pants)

At $899.95, Dainese’s D. Explorer Gore-Tex jacket is only the brand’s second-most expensive jacket that fits our parameters. Still, for this price, you can expect some premium options. First, the combo is made from abrasion-resistant, elasticised Mugello and Quick Dry fabrics with elasticised strategically placed inserts. The numerous adjustments mean that the jacket can adapt better to the wearer’s body and offer superb freedom of movement. Also, the jacket is completely modular. When it’s cold and wet out, the thermal liner will help keep you warm while the Gore-Tex membrane keeps you dry. As the temps pick up, the modular flap system allows the rider to peel away sections of the jacket – from breast to torso – to allow airflow. A similar design is seen on the matching D. Explorer Gore-Tex pants (not shown), allowing the wearer to strip away panels on the thigh. CE-certified protection in all key areas is a given.

Dainese lists no less than 30 jackets and pants, for both men and women, ranging in price from $259.95 – $1,195.95, to keep you dry and warm in inclimate weather. See them all at www.dainese.com.

Joe Rocket Ballistic Adventure Jacket and Ballistic 7.0 Pants

    [IMG]Price: $299.99 (jacket), $149.99 – $169.99 (pants)

Size Range: S-3XL (jacket), XS-5XL (pants, standard), M (pants, short)-3XL (pants, short), M (pants, tall)-3XL (pants, tall)

Colors: Black, Silver (jacket), Black (pants)

The Joe Rocket Ballistic Adventure jacket and pant combo (not shown) represent the more affordable end of this list. Environmental protection starts with a double overstitched, water- and U.V.-resistant RockTex 600 outer chassis. For serious downpours, tucked in behind the 2-way main zipper and double cross-over storm flaps, the Adventure also includes a removable waterproof liner that is backed by an additional insulated full sleeve liner to take you well into colder climates. Once the temps start rising, six vents allow air to flow, and for extreme heat, the lower sleeves are fully removable. Impact protection is provided by Ballistic Nylon reinforcements at the shoulders and elbows, with CE-certified armor underneath. Meanwhile, the Ballistic 7.0 pants feature a heavy duty 630 Hitena twill nylon outer with a removable waterproof liner. There’s CE knee protection and melt-resistant material on the lower leg, too.

Joe Rocket lists 11 products for wet and cold riding, in sizes and styles for both men and women. Prices range from $149.99 – $414.99. See them all at www.joerocket.com.

    Tourmaster Centurion One-Piece Suit

    [IMG]Price: $439.99

    Size Range: XS-3XL

    Colors: Black, Gun Metal Silver

The first full one-piece suit on this list, the Centurion Suit from Tourmaster is made to handle the wet and the cold. Constructed from a 600-denier Carbolex shell with 1680-denier ballistic polyester panels in the shoulders, forearms and knees, it features a patent-pending Aqua-barrier under-helmet hood to prevent water seepage in the collar area, and it conveniently stows away in a hidden pocket when not in use. This combines with a waterproof and breathable Rainguard barrier that keeps rain away without perspiration buildup. Waterproof pocket zippers ensure your items stay dry, while the full-length zipper makes putting the suit on or off over your casual clothes (including base layers for cold rides) very easy. There’s removable CE armor at the elbows, shoulders and knees, as well as a triple-density back protector to help absorb impact from a fall.

Excluding the Centurion, Tourmaster has 16 jacket or pant options for wet/cold weather riding. Prices range from $92.99-$399.99. See them all at www.tourmaster.com.
