I have obtained an aftermarket oil filter for the first oil change but it has no gasket. The Honda dealer is far away. Is the gasket destroyed (come to pieces after sticking to the block) or can it be reused. I promise to get a new one from now on but this one time it would be handy to reuse it. Thanks!
I bought two and looking at the unused one it doesn't have one either so I guess the original held up fine when I did mine. It's a farm here so various vehicles and machines need oil and filters and my preferred option is leave the original if it stays seated. Not unusual to have more problems getting a new one set just right.
I too have re-used filter gaskets (And drain plug washers) without any problems. I think the trick is not to damage the gasket during removal. But I do make a point of having a replacement on hand just in case, and replace them at minimum every other time.
